Justice Clarence Thomas Violated Judicial Conduct by Accepting Gifts – On April 6, 2023, ProPublica, a non-profit investigative journalism outlet, reported that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas had accepted several luxury trips paid for by a GOP megadonor named Harlan Crow.

According to the report, Justice Thomas and his wife, Virginia, were flown to the Crow-owned English countryside estate in 2019 on a private jet, where they stayed for a week. The estimated cost of the trip was over $100,000. In addition, the report states that Justice Thomas had accepted trips to Crow’s vacation home in Colorado and had been given the use of Crow’s yacht.

ProPublica Investigation
The revelations raise ethical questions about whether Justice Thomas violated judicial rules of conduct by accepting gifts and travel from a wealthy individual with political interests. According to the Code of Conduct for United States Judges, judges are required to avoid situations that could reasonably be seen as undermining their impartiality, including accepting gifts or favors that could create the appearance of impropriety.
Accepting Luxury Travel
This is not the first time Justice Thomas has come under scrutiny for his relationships with wealthy donors. In 2016, it was reported that he had failed to disclose his wife’s income from her work with a conservative organization on financial disclosure forms for several years.
Political Donor
Critics of Justice Thomas argue that his acceptance of these gifts and trips could influence his judicial decision-making and raise questions about his impartiality. Supporters of Justice Thomas, however, argue that he has the right to associate with whomever he chooses and that his judicial record speaks for itself.
The Supreme Court has not yet issued a statement on the matter, and it remains to be seen whether any further action will be taken in response to the ProPublica report.
